Windows knew my device was a tablet and showed the start screen, but since there were no touchscreen drivers the soft keyboard wouldn't show up.
The graphics will feel laggy on the generic driver but don't worry once you get the Intel ones installed Windows 10 feels pretty quick. I backed up everything to my microSD so I just pointed Device Manager at the folder and it found them. Install any other missing drivers by checking in Device Manager. The latest compatibile Intel HD graphics driver can be found here, altough the Dell download does include one. Dell provides a nice single file download intended for the Venue 8 Pro that has a lot of Bay Trail drivers included and they keep it up to date. Things like touchscreen, even the power button didn't work after install.
The install process is pretty quick and only used about 10% battery life on my Encore.
I skipped connecting to the internet during install to speed things up. I have an 8.1 recovery flash drive and didn't want any old partitions sticking around wasting space. I deleted all of the misc partitions from Windows 8.1 and let Windows 10 recreate them. Remember, the touch screen will not work so you need to use a USB mouse. Your tablet should now boot from the flash drive and begin installing Windows 10. The boot device options may be labelled differently on your tablet, heres a general guide. In Windows open up Advanced Startup, use a device and select EFI USB drive. Hook up your USB hub with flash drive and mouse to your tablet. You can then copy the files over from the iso to the flash drive, easiest way to do this is by mounting it. From the command prompt, diskpart can be used to create a FAT32 USB key, see the instructions here. Its important to use FAT32 as NTFS (what the Windows 7 USB tool uses) won't work with UEFI. If your tablet came with Microsoft Office, make sure you have a copy of the key backed up.Ĭreate a FAT32 Windows 10 install USB drive. I created a 8.1 restoration USB key when I first bought my tablet, so I could delete the recovery partition. I used this software to back them up to a microSD. It can't hurt to have drivers backed up if you want to go back to 8.1 or need to use them on 10. Fully charged tablet (unless yours can charge and use USB at the same time)īackup your drivers and OS if you want to downgrade in the future. USB keyboard (optional, there is an on screen you can use with a mouse)
OTG adapter (for tablets without full size USB port) I don't take any responsibility if you mess up your tablet, installing this preview is for advanced users only. I took the plunge and installed Windows 10 on my Toshiba Encore, but these steps should apply to any Bay Trail tablet you want to install Windows 10 on.
